WLVL Radio Interview--May 29, 1998

Jon May:  Phil Hartman, being found dead yesterday.  Sad story, but we talked about that earlier.  We don't want to depress you too much 'cause it's 8:09 at 1340 WLVL on Live Jive Friday and I'm Jon May, you host of the program and we welcome to the studios right now, a local band that's just, I guess relatively new on the scene from what I understand and they're called Spill. Good Morning.

Sarit, Adam, & Randy: Good morning Jon.

Jon: I got three, three names. I got Randy.  I got Adam. And I got Sa--, uh Sarit. Is that how you...

Sarit: Sarit

Jon:  Sarit, I don't want to mispronounce it.

Sarit: That's ok

Jon:...'cuase I hate that when people do that.  Uh listen, welcome to the show guys.  I appreciate your coming out today.

Adam:  Thank you

Sarit: Oh, thank you.

Randy: Thank you for having us

Jon:  What uh, tell us a little bit about yourselves. Now Sarit and Adam, you guys are from Brooklyn.  Right?

Sarit:  Yeah, uh we grew up in Brooklyn, New York in lovely Bensonhurst and I guess until we went away to college, that's where we were.  And then we parted for a couple of years when I went to Philadelphia to college and Adam went to um, Pe..

Adam: Penn State University.

Sarit:  And then we re-grouped here and uh, in Buffalo.  The short synopsis is that I came up here to start law school at U.B. and then I kind of decided that it was kind of lame (slight laughter) and I started a band instead.

Jon:  Ok.  Uh, it's sort of...and then up here is where you hooked up with Randy, right?

Sarit: yes, that's kind of an interesting story how we hooked up with him.  Um, we were looking for a drummer 'cuase our drummer with our old band wasn't working out and we called up the Artvoice to put an ad in the paper and Vic, at the time, was doing all the advertising, uh knew uh Randy uh intimately so...

Randy: ....now don't go there....
(laugher)

Jon:  Yes, it's still eight in the morning, you know....

Randy:  ohhhh..

Sarit: yes, so he, uh um, so he recommended him to us and uh we hooked up and um it's been a great union.

Jon: well great, uh now....

Randy:  mmmmmvvahaaiiii!!

Jon: (laughs)....now you guys, uh real quick 'cuase we want to get to this song and it's uh, it's rather lengthy although it's a neat one 'cuase I did listen to your demo CD which, by the way, i've taken really good care of 'cuase i know that it's your only one...

Sarit: (laughs) thanks.

Adam: god love you

Jon:  So are we premiering this song, is that the idea?

Sarit:  um I guess so.  You guys are the first ones to play it on air.  We did...

Jon: ahh, we love that.

Adam:  the big premier!!

Sarit:  we didn't intend for ti be really played on air.  But uh, it's cool that you guys...

Jon:  well it's about to be so...But before we do that we want to talk about something that you're going to be doing uuuuuh, i guess, did you do it already? The Cleveland festival.

Sarit: uh yeah, we just came back.  It's called Undercurrents' 98 and its uh....

Jon:  yes

Sarit:.....international music industry conference and showcase.

Jon:  my dates are screwed up here.  Yes, that has already happened.  Tell us real quick about that.

Sarit:  It was a excellent opportunity to meet other bands and industry professionals.  Uh it was very very inspiring. We had uh a great, a great show.  We kicked off the whole affair.  We got a great response and we met alot of people, uh our future producer we'll be working with a.......a couple of bands and indie label heads and it, and it was just a great experience.

Jon:  How on earth did you get selected for something like that ?  how did you find out?  How did they find out about you, really?

Sarit: that's kind of the weird thing.  We go together, the band thing was in the end of January?  And really we found out about it two weeks before the deadline and we cranked out a four song demo on a 4-track and we applied ad when we got accepted, we haven't even played our first show.  So it just really put the gear into...the band into high gear.

Jon:  Boy I hope this works!

Adam: yes, yes.

Randy:  you should have seen the recording sessions.

Jon: oh, i can imagine.  Well, we're gonna hear on of the results of some of the your recording sessions.  And what son....tell us a little bit about the song we're gonna hear.

Sarit: oh it's called The Air That You Breathe, it's a bit lengthy, not really radio..(laughs) doesn't really fit the mold

Jon: that's OK.

Sarit:  But it's.....i don't really know like really what it's about. It's just about all kinds of random things and you know, issues that you know, we kinda grapple with in our everyday lives.

Jon: well, lets give it a random listen here.  We'll be back with Randy and Sarit and Adam after eight thirty news and we'll talk to them more and they're gonna play a live song for us in studio.  In the meantime, lets listen to Spill and The Air That You Breathe on 1340's WLVL Live Jive Friday.

(Played The Air That You Breathe on air)

Jon:  It's 8:39am alright.  No it's not 8:39 Jon, it's 8:19am at 1340 WLVL and that is the band Spill The Air That You Breathe on Live Jive Friday.  They'll be back with us just after the 8:30 news.  We'll talk to them some more and we've got a couple of surprises for you in regard to the band as well.  And they'll play a live song for us in studio just after the 8:30 news.  It's 8:19 right now in our WLVL studios and we go to traffic with Paul Shepard.  Good morning Paul.

Sarit: Yes, we're back

Jon:  we're back again, yes we are.  Now we're gonna be talking about one of you...a couple, actually, of your upcoming gigs n just a little bit.  But I think what we should do here is uh, lets get right to the song.

Sarit: yes

Jon: let's talk about what you're gonna play for us live here in the studio.

Sarit:  well we're gonna play a song, it's the third song on our demo.  It's called Never Again.  We're gonna really strip it down acoustically.  So no holds barred, as they say.

Jon:  like that unplugged thing

Sarit: yes (laughs)

Jon:  lets take a listen.  This is Spill on Live Jive Friday.

(Never Again played live in the studio)

Jon:  8:45 at 1340 WLVL that Spill.  We have Sarit, and Adam, and Randy and great job guys.

Sarit: ah, thank you

Jon: Thank you very much for coming in today and we have just a couple of seconds left. Two quick things we want to mention.   First of all, you got a big show coming up this coming sunday.  Tell us about that.

Sarit: uh, that's a big show.  We're opening for Firewater which is a national act.  And we're lucky enough that they're coming to Buffalo and playing at Mohawk and that's gonna start at around like 9:30 or 10 so we hope that alot of people show up.

Jon:  and uh, you have another show, and this is our little surprise.
you have a show at the Showplace Theater.

Sarit:  yes, Showplace Theater it's June 12th and we have a couple of tickets that we gave you Jon, to give away to listeners and we hope that alot of people wanna come out and stuff 'cuase it's gonna be a really good show.

Jon: right if you're listening and you enjoyed what you heard, i've got, let me seek, one, two, three, four pairs of tickets to the showplace theater.  Spill, you guys are the headliners is that....you got the biggest...

Sarit: um, i'm not sure of the lineup yet but we'll be playing definitely either third or fourth..

Jon:..'cause your print was the biggest on the tickets here.

Sarit:  well, you know, we're...we're humble!!

Jon: we're humble, alright.  But that's friday June 12th at the Showplace Theater and if you'd like these tickets, i've got 4 pairs of them. Just give me a call here at 433-1433 and um, we'll give 'em to you.  Guys, i'm sorry to say we're out of time...

Sarit: that's ok (laughs)

Jon:....hanging out with us this morning

Randy:  very nice

Jon: fresh coffee and everything

Adam: yes

Jon:  Randy and Adam and Sarit thank you very much

Randy: thanks Jon, okay.

Adam: thanks guys

Sarit: ok

Adam: we will

Randy:  yeah

Jon: mmmmm, yeah, ok, good
