WBNY Radio Interview on 6-11-98

DJ:  91.3 FM WBNY the local show on Buffalo's original alternative.  The only 4 hour local show I might add in the entire area.  And now, for a special treat...it's finally back.  It's taken a while, just like me, but the glorified rehearsal is back.  We're going over to the green room right now to my man, Tiny Elvis who's there with Spill.

Tiny:  In the green room in Buffalo State College studios.  Hi, I'm Tiny Elvis, your host of the glorified rehearsal and we're here with on bass and vocals it's Sarit, and Adam is on guitar, and Randy on drums and they are called Spill they got a few for you right now.  And we're gonna come back, play demo and then we're gonna talk to the group.  Take it away!

(Live, in studio, performance)

Tiny:  91.3 FM WBNY Buffalo original alternative.  This is Tiny Elvis with you from the glorified rehearsal and our guests this week are Spill.  Right now I'd like to throw out a question real quick before we move into the demo.  I know you wanted to drink there Sarit but uh, anybody who wants to answer this one.  Just tell us a little bit about yourselves.  Just like about the band how long you've been together, etc.  Just....

Sarit:  Well, we've only been together about 6 months and Adam and I, who is my brother

Adam: (claps)

Sarit:  we uh started song writing together and uh, eventually decided that most things in life suck except music so we started a band and went looking for Randy and started out by trying to put an ad in the Artvoice but um since Randy worked there, he had the inside scoop and we got together.  And that's how we got together.

Tiny:  'cause I tell you, you guys are rocking.  For.....6 months you say?

Sarit: yeah

Tiny: oh man, superstars!

Sarit:  oh thank you.

Randy: yeah!

Tiny:  we're gonna move right now into a track off of your demo.  This one's called Never Again

Sarit: yes

Tiny:  we'll give yo a chance to catch your breath now.  You're listening to 91.3 FM WBNY

(Never Again played on the air)

Tiny: 91.3 FM WBNY Buffalo's original alternative here at the glorified rehearsal with our guests today Spill.

Sarit, Adam, and Randy:  YEAH YEAH, WOO!!

Tiny: And they are excited to be here.  We're excited to have you guys.  Thanx for coming out tonight.

Sarit:  we had nothing else to do.

Tiny:  That's good press.  I'm sure I'll get alot of compliments at home.  Because I know that alot of people are listening.  Well, we'll start out with the traditional questions tat all of the bands seem to get answered.  I know Randy's gonna be a little hesitant on this but I mean, what about some of your influences....bands that you might like.  In fact, if you don't want to dwell into the influences.

Sarit: I prefer the term inspirations.

Tiny:  ok inspirations, right.

Sarit: well, personally, I'm inspired by bands like Radiohead and Pearl Jam and Adam, what are your inspirations.

Adam:  I will never stop loving that Nirvana and stuff like Mudhoney and all that good stuff that pissed kids off about 5 or 6 years ago.  That's me!

Randy: I like the Ohio Players and Marilyn Manson.

Tiny:  two diverse bands right there.  Beautiful that's what I like to see.  Now, you've been around for about 6 months now together as Spill.  What are your feelings on the local scene around here?  I mean...

Sarit: oh boy.  Well um...

Tiny:  be careful now.

Sarit:  it's very hard, I think, for a band to start out and we met alot of cool people in the industry who really try to help local bands.  But at the same time, there's alot of apathy and um alot of you're kind of on your own most of the time.  And It's just really hard and lack of professionalism, that's one thing that really pisses me off.  Anyone else wanna add...

Tiny:  what about the crowds though?  Do you feel the crowds get into it?  Randy...

Randy:  well, i'll field that one.  All I could say is that i've been in bands where we'll play one show....i'm feeding back. Should I stand back here?  OH RADIO TECHNICIAN!!  I've been in bands where there's one show on Friday night in Buffalo and get crickets.  The next show we'd play the exact same set, same band another night in like Rochester or Niagara Falls and it's like after every song it's like "dahhhhh" everyone's applauding and going crazy.  Everyone's having a good time.  It's like there's almost an essence of being too cool to show an emotion for alot of the crowds in Buffalo and it's like they'd rather stand there with their hands in their pockets, smoke a clove cigarette, and go "mmmmmvaaaaiii".  So we're trying to escape that somehow by putting some energy, you know like power pop rock in the classic sense back into the mainstream of Buffalo.

Tiny:  And maybe blowing some fire, huh?  Fire does it!

Randy:  When I light my farts, the fire goes WAY OUT!!

Adam:  yeah, I think that alot of people won't come out out for the sake of coming out to see big bands at shows.  It'll be "what have i heard about them lately?" lets go see what 4 bands are playing here and see what's up.

Tiny:  It's funny that you guys say that there's kind of like a stale crowd around Buffalo because it is true.  I've been to Rochester, I've been to Toronto and I'll tell you, everybody gets into it it's....

Sarit: yeah, you should have seen Cleveland....

Randy:  Cleveland rocks like......it's amazing!! It's the difference between night and day.

Tiny:  why don't you tell us about Cleveland about the.....Undercurrents show that you guys were a part of.

Sarit:  Well, it's a funny story 'cuase we were only a band together for two months and we decided that we should apply for this thing just for the hell of it.  So we had no demo and we bought a 4-track and we recorded it really shitty and really quickly and then...

Randy: you can't say that on the air.

Sarit:  ....ooops and then we got accepted and were like "wow" but you know, we haven't played our first show yet so we made sure to book ourselves during the next two months after that and played shows and Cleveland was just great.  We met like so many band and were just so cool, we're gonna bring some them up here in September.  And industry people....and it was like a vacation....bands everywhere.  Of course we had our laminated passes so we felt important which was the best part....

Tiny:  yeah yeah.  So the crowd was responsive then I mean...

Sarit:  yeah, all three days people kept coming up to us and were like "oh, you're Spill. We saw you.  You guys were really cool" and I don't remember these people.  Well, you're on stage, you can't really pinpoint who's watching you. But the response was pretty cool.

MISSING PART

Sarit:...and then wed. the 17th we're playing at Nietzche's it's like the semi-finals for like the Buffalo Beat Absolut best band something or other so that's gonna be alot of fun and that's free so you have no reason to not come out.

Adam:  90210 is off the air....

Sarit:  yeah there's no more 90210 there's nothing going on on Wednesday night, school's out so you have no reason....

Randy: Seinfeld's over people.  Get used to it.

Sarit:  And then at the Continental next month July 10th and all that good stuff.

Tiny: alright, well what we'll do now is we'll go into the studio here, we'll play another track off of your demo, called Brother.  And then we'll come back and we'll have the thank yous and I wanna thank you first of all for coming out but we'll come back and thank you all individually and we'll throw it into the studio with the Pimp, Super Mike, the kingpin

Randy: yeah....

(Brother played on the air)

Tiny: 91.3 FM WBNY Buffalo's original alternative.  Tiny Elvis here with you at the glorified rehearsal.  We're just wrapping  things up here with you folks with the band Spill

Tiny:  thanx for coming out you guys.  And just to remind you that they'll be at the Showplace Theater tomorrow at uh...

Sarit:  it's at 10:30 pm

Tiny: and i would like to thank....

Randy:  come on out and dot my com!!

Tiny:  Super Mike Shuler for coming out and helping us set up all the engineering stuff as well as the pimp here as he's learning and hopefully will teach me how to do all this.  The Kingpin, who's since left the building, for working the board.  And of course for Spill for coming out this evening.  And of course, I'm Tiny Elvis and I guess we'll see you next week.

Sarit: yes, thank you Tiny

Tiny: rock and roll!

Adam:  yes, thanks guys

Randy: viva las vegas baby!

Tiny:  And we'll throw it back into the studio guys.
